Candle Care

To increase the life out of your candle while maintaining safety, follow these simple tips.

Before lighting:

  • Before burning, always trim the wick to 1/4 inch. You may use nail clippers, scissors, or a wick trimmer. Visit our Accessory section under "Shop" to purchase a candle care kit!
  • On the first burn,  allow the entire top of the candle to melt.  This is also known as a full melt pool. This can take anywhere from 2-4 hours. This step will ensure a long even burn in the future.
  • Keep the wax pool clear of debris.
  • Good practice is to use a candle coaster to protect surfaces from heat.

Burn candles in a well-ventilated room:

  • Avoid drafts, vents or air currents. Thiis will help prevent rapid or uneven burning and sooting.
  • Do not burn any candle longer than 4 hours. Cool for at least 2 hours before relighting.
  • Use long matches or a long-reach lighter for lighting. Keep loose clothing and hair away from flame.

While Burning:

  • Never leave a candle unattended.
  • Never burn a candle on or near anything that can catch fire. Keep burning candles away from furniture, drapes, bedding, carpets, books, paper, flammable decorations, etc.
  • Keep candles out of the reach of children and pets. Do not place lighted candles where they can be knocked over by children, pets or anyone else.
  • Never touch or move a candle while it is burning or while the wax is liquefied.
  • Don’t burn a candle all the way down. For a margin of safety, discontinue burning a candle when 1/2 inch remains in the container or 2 inches if using a pillar candle.
  • Place burning candles at least three inches apart from one another. This is to make sure they don’t melt one another, or create their own drafts that will cause the candles to burn improperly.
  • Extinguish a candle if the flame becomes too high or flickers repeatedly. Let the candle cool, trim the wick, and check for unwanted drafts before re-lighting.
  • Never use a candle as a night light or while you may fall asleep.
  • Be very careful if using candles during a power outage. Flashlights and other battery-powered lights are safer sources of light during a power failure. Never use a candle during a power outage to look for things in a closet, or when fueling equipment – such as a lantern or kerosene heater.

Low Wax:

When there is only 1/2 inch of wax left in the jar it is time to discard. The best option is to recycle your jar. Reach out to us and we will make you another custom candle in the scent of your choice at a discounted price!

When Extinguishing a Candle:

  • Use a candle snuffer to extinguish flame. This will reduce smoke and prevent hot wax from splattering. Hold the snuffer over the flame for 5 seconds. (View our accessory section to view our candle care kit)
  • Never use water to extinguish a candle. Water can cause the hot wax to splatter and might break a glass container.
  • Make sure the candle is completely out and the wick ember is no longer glowing before leaving the room.
  • Don’t touch or move the candle until it has completely cooled.
  • Never use a knife or sharp object to remove wax drippings from a glass holder. It might scratch, weaken, or cause the glass to break upon subsequent use.
  • Once the candle has cooled, cover it with the lid to keep dust off the surface.
  • Keep wick trimmed to 1/4 inch.

Candle Safety:

Are Scented Candles Safe?

According to candles.org a well-made and properly burned candle, whether scented or unscented, will burn cleanly and safely. Although there are no known health hazards associated with the use of scented candles, unfounded concerns about the safety of man-made fragrances vs. “natural” fragrance materials and essential oils continue to populate the media. The fragrances approved for candle usage – whether synthesized or “natural” – do not release toxic chemicals.

Are candles made from petroleum-based products safe?

Validated scientific studies have shown that all major candle waxes exhibit the same basic burn behavior and produce virtually identical combustion byproducts, both in terms of composition and amount. To date, no peer-reviewed scientific study has ever collected or analyzed any emissions data on any candle wax, including petroleum-based paraffin, and proven them to be harmful to human health.

Is candle soot harmful?

No. The minuscule amount of soot produced by a candle is the natural byproduct of incomplete combustion. Candle soot is composed primarily of elemental carbon particles, and is similar to the soot given off by kitchen toasters and cooking oils. These everyday household sources of soot are not considered a health concern, and are chemically different from the soot formed by the burning of diesel fuel, coal, gasoline, etc.

The production of candle soot can also be minimized in the following ways:  Trim the wick to ¼ inch before every use to promote proper flame height, place the candle away from drafty areas to avoid flame flickering, and ensure that the wax pool is free of debris.

Wax Melts:

Wax melts are pieces of wax that are made in various shapes, colours and sizes, which are heated using a warmer to release their fragrance.

Wax melts can be broken up into pieces, so you can choose any size portion they wish, making them very convenient to use.

Our 2.75 ounce packs contain approximately 6 one inch cubes.

Burn time ia approximately 7-12 hours per cube.
